About us / Manifesto

A desk, not a newsroom.

Bellwether exists for one reason: to explain how things actually work, with nothing to sell you.

A bellwether is the ram that carries the bell: the animal the flock follows. It is the first to sense danger or a change in the air. The others follow without question, guided only by the sound of the bell.

In finance the term means the same thing: the company, sector or indicator that moves first and signals where everything else is heading. It decides nothing, but when it moves, the rest is about to move.

We took the name because this is what we cover: the companies and events that act as a bellwether for everything else, told in full.

Why we exist

Every day companies are discussed through numbers, forecasts and valuations, while the simplest question goes missing: what company are we actually looking at?

Bellwether starts there. From the wish to know a company before trying to interpret its numbers: where it was born, who founded it, how it changed over time, which decisions brought it where it is today and, above all, what sits behind the ticker we see on the screen.

That is why our articles are not meant to get you to a conclusion faster, but to give the reader the tools to build one. Thorough, verifiable, without the rush to say something every day.

But the curiosity does not stop at companies. To understand today's world you sometimes have to look at the economics of the past: the agreements, the crises and the political and economic decisions that left permanent consequences. Because what seems distant in time is often still present, hidden inside today's numbers.

Bellwether is for the curious. For anyone who wants to understand a company before looking at its chart, and also for anyone who, faced with an economic event from the past, asks "how did we get here?"

Because before the numbers there is always a story, some people and some decisions.
